Dirty Neighbors, Drive Drove Driven, Cars in Contemporary Photography, FO.KU.S, Innsbruck

For over 100 years, the car has determined the everyday lives of people, fascinated and polarized as a cult object or environmental killer. In contemporary art, international photographers have made the subject of the car manifold.
Cars are projection surfaces for wishes, symbols for freedom, design wonders and erotic status symbols. In contemporary art, it is always central image subject such as Andy Warhol or Gabriel Orozco.
In the exhibition, curated by Matthias Harder for Omaha, Nebraska, and adapted for the FO.KU.S, the range of today’s artistic approaches is exemplarily presented with completely different individual works and picture series. It shows a multi-layered image of society in our automotive present, away from the gloss of advertising photography, a kaleidoscope between fascination and criticism. The exhibition focuses on the way into a highly technical but uncertain mobile future.
