20/20 Future is Now

More than ten years ago, Hendrik Lietmann and Marc Volk organized an exchange of twelve photography students from Berlin and the Ruhr region. Under the theme “2020 – Can you see it?” the students dared to take a photographic look into the future in a foreign country. The result was two well-attended exhibitions in Essen and Berlin, a catalog, and a website that fortunately still exists.

In the late summer of the corona year 2020, a hard core of no less than eight of those involved at the time got back together and began to exchange ideas online about old times, current projects and corona-related life situations. The idea quickly arose to once again realize a photographic project together, this time under the title “20/20 – Future is Now“.

The new works are now shown for the first time in Utopiastadt in Wuppertal.

Opening: Saturday, November 20, 2021, 19:00.

Exhibition duration: November  21 – December 19, 2021

Opening hours: daily from 16:00 – 20:00

Location: Utopiastadt, Mirker Str. 48, 42105 Wuppertal, Germany

Telephone

TELEPHONE was launched on April 10th 2021.

It is just like the kids’ game. A message is whispered from one person to another and changes as it is passed.

We whisper a message from art form to art form. A message could become a painting, then music, then poetry, then dance. We whisper each finished work of art to multiple artists so the game branches out exponentially…

Artists from 493 cities in 72 countries participated in this game.

On German and Mexican Photography

This is a joint seminar between AAVI (Mexico City) and IPS (Berlin). During a six week class we will present interesting photographic views from both countries. In each online session, the experienced artist and lecturers Beatriz Diaz and Marc Volk will present the work from a contemporary photographer from their home country in detail. After the presentation an open discussion will be held between all participants.

Also, students will be able to show a finished or in process body of work to receive well-founded critique.

This class will be taught in English. Since the number of participants from each country is limited to 6 persons, early registration is recommended.
The fee for the entire webinar is EUR 260,00.

Starting on: 10 February 2021

Karina-Sirkku Kurz will explore the theme of “loneliness” in associative portraits and still lifes, documenting a phenomenon of social relevance.

Arwed Messmer will deal with one of Berlin’s most controversial transport projects after 1945 in his photographic-topographical investigation “Last Exit Sachsendamm”.

Passagiere in the exhibition “Beyond the Wall”

Between November 1990 and July 1991, I photographed people in the Berlin subway. Passengers move between East and West, between hope and fear, between nostalgia and departure, between learned certainties and new ideas, and perhaps also between old homes and new homes. These pictures will now be shown for the first time in the exhibition Beyond the Wall.

For the exhibition, the book Passagiere (mv edition, 86 pages with 46 illustrations) with a text by Matthias Harder will be published.

Selected Work of the International Class Vol. 1, curated by Susanne Holschbach and Marc Volk

Brenda Alamilla, Rodrigo Alejandro Alcocer de Garay, Nelle Andersen, Tegwen Evans, Hengame Hosseini, Keith Shuaib

The exhibition “Staged, Constructed, Real” presents current works by six of our former international students. The artists engage in very individual and surprising ways with the dramaturgical, constructive and depictive qualities of the photographic medium. The works not only reflect upon the conditions and possibilities of photography but illustrate with both playfulness and subtlety the large potential of the forms of presentation of photographic images in the era of screens and displays.

A considerable part of our work is clearly dedicated to our students. Nevertheless, the creative and diverse team running the show behind the scenes of Neue Schule für Fotografie is composed of more than a dozen photographers, artists and experts in their fields. We all have other jobs and work on our own projects. Some of us travel a lot, and we cover very different areas of photography and art in and beyond Berlin.

This exhibition gives a small insight into our own work not only to the general public, but also to our students, colleagues, and any enthusiasts fascinated by the wide range of applicability of our medium.

Dirty Neighbors at FO.KU.S in Innsbruck

06.06.-14.07.2018
Dirty Neighbors, Drive Drove Driven, Cars in Contemporary Photography, FO.KU.S, Innsbruck

For over 100 years, the car has determined the everyday lives of people, fascinated and polarized as a cult object or environmental killer. In contemporary art, international photographers have made the subject of the car manifold.
Cars are projection surfaces for wishes, symbols for freedom, design wonders and erotic status symbols. In contemporary art, it is always central image subject such as Andy Warhol or Gabriel Orozco.
In the exhibition, curated by Matthias Harder for Omaha, Nebraska, and adapted for the FO.KU.S, the range of today’s artistic approaches is exemplarily presented with completely different individual works and picture series. It shows a multi-layered image of society in our automotive present, away from the gloss of advertising photography, a kaleidoscope between fascination and criticism. The exhibition focuses on the way into a highly technical but uncertain mobile future.
